How it works
Tika’s legal service is provided by law firm Tika Legal. Anyone aged 18+ can confidentially register as a client. There are no time restrictions, meaning you are eligible regardless of whether you experienced sexual harm when you were a child, teenager, or adult. There is no cost to register and our legal service is free.
Registering as a client
You start by registering and sharing details about yourself, the person who harmed you, and the type of sexual harm you experienced. You'll also confirm your identity with ID. If you need a break, you can put your file on hold, or withdraw and ask Tika to delete your information - you're in control of the process.
Linking clients
You move to the next step when at least two others register and name the same person who harmed you. This timing varies and may take a long time. If you don't want to wait, you can report to NZ Police, and Tika can pass on the information you've already provided.
Group formation
When your group is formed, Tika notifies you, but your identities are not shared with each other. You may be asked to provide extra information so a lawyer can prepare legal advice for your group.
Legal advice
A lawyer gives each client advice on the options available: Criminal, Regulatory, Civil, Restorative justice, Mediation or a supported meeting.
Decision making
After everyone receives legal advice, your group votes on your preferred option. If you can't agree, vote on a second choice or pause your file until further linked clients join your group.
Collective action
When everyone agrees on the same option, you take collective action as a group. A lawyer represents you all from start to finish, and you will be identified to each other at the right time.
What is sexual harm?
Sexual harm includes unwanted sexual behaviour affecting you physically, verbally, or psychologically. It can occur online or in person, including:
- Assault
- Harassment
- Grooming
- Unwanted touching
- Abusive comments
- Sharing intimate images without consent

Working with a lawyer
Tika provides a structured legal service to help people seek justice after experiencing sexual harm. We operate like a normal law firm, but because we’re a charity, our services are free. Our approach is designed to be safe, clear, and empowering.When you work with a Tika lawyer, they will:

Not ready to take legal action?
You can still register with Tika even if you're not ready to move forward with legal action. By registering and reporting you'll know you've done something to make Aotearoa New Zealand a safer place

- Free short-term counselling from the Ministry of Social Development (a government agency).
- Free long-term counselling from ACC (another government agency).
- Private, paid counselling from a psychologist (you can ask your GP for a recommendation).
